Historic Significance

Powell Elementary is an urban school that embraces the principles of the 21st century, blending old and new elements to create vibrant, environmentally friendly, and healthy learning environments.

Originally constructed in 1925, the school's historical significance led to its selection for a comprehensive modernization project. The existing building, spanning 38,500 square feet, was meticulously renovated alongside the addition of two new wings, expanding the total area to 90,000 square feet. The school's location in a densely populated urban area necessitated significant utility upgrades.

Addressing a previous lack of a centralized air conditioning system. SETTY provided MEP/FP designs during the Phase 1 - FY 2012 School Bridging Services, as well as contributed to the schematic design for the entire modernization endeavour.

The renovation project embraced a visionary four-phase master plan, revolving around the concept of two green spaces that serve as focal points for outdoor classrooms and rooftop gardens. Inside the school, the interior spaces were thoughtfully designed to cater to differentiated learning needs, accommodating small, medium, and large groups.

By seamlessly blending new additions and sitework with the renovation of the existing historic brick building, the project successfully preserves the school's architectural heritage while embracing contemporary educational standards.

The result is an inspiring and harmonious environment that nurtures both academic excellence and sustainability.
