The new PS 163 Arthur A. Schomburg Elementary School in the Fordham Heights neighborhood of the Bronx will offer a modern, energy-efficient learning environment for Pre-K through fifth grade students. This four-story facility is designed to replace the outdated three-story building constructed in the 1970s, along with the temporary classroom units that were added in the 1990s.

The project will be carried out in phases, beginning with the removal of the temporary classroom units. Construction and occupancy of the new school building will follow, after which the existing building will be demolished to make way for a large lower playground.

SETTY is providing MEP/FP design for the new PS 163X Arthur A. Schomburg Elementary School, designed by Dattner Architects. This energy-efficient facility aims in creating a modern home for students.

At approximately 82,000 SF, PS 163X accommodates around 688 students, organized vertically: early grades on the second floor, middle grades on the third, and upper grades on the fourth. The design features a double-height gymnatorium on the third floor and an honorific library overlooking Webster Avenue on the fourth.

SETTY’s engineering integrates high-performance, code-compliant MEP/FP systems, emphasizing student comfort, operational efficiency, and adaptability within both educational and community contexts.
